Na de lancering van de ugame-ulearn campagne kom je af en toe voor een verrassing te staan. De ontworpen poster voor ugame-ulearn kom helemaal over een met de UPA Poster in vorm en onderwerp. Tijdens de brainstorm essie kwam we met het idee om een soort ganzenbord te maken omdat dit in lijn lag met een vorige campagne van een scrabble bord.
Na dit gegeven, gaat je aan het ontwerpen en zet een paar lijnen neer, waarna je het verder uitwerkt. En soms komen dingen wel heel eng dichtbij elkaar. Klik op foto om het verschil te zien.

Today it is one year ago that Barack Obama was elected. Time to look back to his Campaign. Scott Thomas the Design Director for Obama’s 2008 campaign, led a now-historic political campaign, in which branding, design, and the web played a truly pivotal role. Likening the experience to “building an airplane in flight,” Scott talks about the creative’s need for triage, the crucial role of incremental design improvements, and the importance of getting back to the hand and keeping things simple.

About Scott
Scott Thomas is constantly seeking the simplest answer to complex problems. Scott began his design pursuits studying architecture before bouncing to graphic design and web development.

In 2006, he and five other creative types began a design collective, lovingly known as The Post Family. The group is devoted to supporting “family” member’s design habits-from silkscreen to letterpress, from illustration to blogging-in an effort to “get back to the hand.”

In 2007, Scott’s career took a dramatic leap when he was invited to join the New Media team at Obama for America. He is currently writing a book that explains how an obscure senator rose to the highest office in the land and celebrity status with the aid of branding and design.

This month Massive Attack release a brand new Ep. Its calles Splitting the Atom EP. When i look at it, i said to my self, i have seen this artwork before. I did a quick search in my record collection, and there is was. War Stories from Unkle (limited edition). First i thought It was a Massive Attack on Unkle’s artwork. But after i search the internet i found some thinking outstanding. All the artwork of Unkle War Stories was made by Robert Del Naja of Massive Attack. Robert Del Naja was a young graffiti artist before becoming a vocalist. Indeed his first ever live gig was as a DJ accompanying artwork he had produced in a gallery in Bristol. He has produced work in various different media, and has published a book of his art. His work has been featured in magazines and on record sleeves. The graffiti artist Banksy cites his work as an influence. He took part in the largest ever British graffiti art battle alongside Wolverhampton artist Goldie. And in 2007 he created the cover art for War Stories.

Mixing and manipulating corporate logos and traditional Chinese symbols, Shanghai-based artist Chen Hang Feng makes intricate paper cutouts that riff on both the era of mega-businesses and his own ancient heritage. This video visits Feng in his studio and accompanies him on a paper-finding walk while he talks about his work, his teacher and materials.

Het lijkt op de bekende ‘zoek-de-verschillen’ kinderplaatjes, met dien verstande dat er dit keer geen verschillen zijn. Het nieuwe logo voor de gehele rijksoverheid is hetzelfde als het bestaande logo van Algemene Zaken (AZ), het ministerie van premier Balkenende. Er zijn nog meer overeenkomsten: beide logo’s zijn ontworpen door Studio Dumbar, dat hiervoor ook twee keer betaald werd.

Trotse Balkenende
Op 21 december vorig jaar presenteerde een trotse Balkenende de nieuwe huisstijl voor alle ministeries en overheidsinstanties zoals de Belastingdienst. Een sobere uitvoering van het rijkswapen met de bekende leeuwen moet een eind maken aan het huidige woud van stijlen en logo’s. Vijf ontwerpbureaus waren in de race voor deze prestigieuze opdracht, Dumbar was de winnaar.

Tom Dorresteijn van het bureau erkent dat het nieuwe logo gelijk is aan wat zijn bureau eerder voor AZ ontwierp. Hij haalt de Griekse mythologische figuur Odysseus erbij om dat te verklaren. Alles werd onderzocht, nieuwe afbeeldingen, kleuren, invalshoeken, om ten slotte – net als Odysseus – thuis te komen bij het eigen vertrouwde AZ-ontwerp. ‘We kwamen erachter dat we daar niet meer aan moesten sleutelen.’

Dat Dumbar voor deze zoektocht met 60.000 euro is beloond, vindt Dorresteijn logisch. ‘Achteraf kun je zeggen dat de zoektocht overbodig was, maar dat weet je niet vooraf.’ De woordvoerder van de premier deelt die mening: ‘Het gaat om een Europese aanbesteding. Je weet niet waar zo’n project uitkomt.’
